Profile

Dr Mackay is a highly experienced and well-regarded surgeon who specialises in surgery of the hand – both elective hand conditions and trauma,  reconstructive microsurgery and revision of post-traumatic deformity.

His undergraduate study was at the University of Queensland, where he completed degrees in Science and then in Medicine and Surgery. Following graduation, he undertook an internship in basic surgical training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Dr Mackay then undertook advanced surgical training in general surgery prior to his selection for specialist training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Upon completion, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

A fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital followed and during this time, Dr Mackay worked alongside senior surgeons to gain the broadest possible exposure to advanced surgical techniques. His fellowship involved large volumes of hand trauma and complex microsurgical reconstructions.

Dr Mackay is Director of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, and remains committed to education and training, regularly teaching junior doctors and registrars. He is a former Council member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Australian Hand Surgery Society.

Dr Mackay is regularly involved in the multidisciplinary management of complex problems in association with hand therapists and surgeons from other specialities such as orthopaedics.

Dr Mackay’s Surgical Philosophy

As a hand surgeon, my role is to manage all injuries, conditions and ailments of the hand. I have more of a conservative approach to surgery – not all patients who see me need surgery, sometimes all people need is some certainty and advice. I would much rather see a patient with a non-surgical condition early to confirm the diagnosis and make sure they are on the right track to recovery. Equally, if the condition is serious or problematic for the patient, my Practice is well equipped to assist them through education, surgery and rehabilitation.
